Baby Proofing Your House

Baby-proofing is the most important step which you can do once your baby is beginning to move. Here are few steps to get you started.

Bathroom:
  • Install no-skid mats on the bottom of the tub.
  • Install lid locks on all toilets and keep the lid closed to prevent from slamming on your baby's head or hands.
  • Unplug razors, hair dryers when not in use, and store them out of reach.
  • All medicines should be stored locked cabinet with safety caps on them.
Kitchen:
  • Store chemicals and cleaning agents in a high cabinet. If kept under the sink, use a childproof lock on the cabinet doors
  • Keep forks, knife and other sharp objects in a latched drawer separate from safe kitchen utensils.
  • Make sure all drawers have stops, so that your baby or toddler can't pull the drawer out on top of himself.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen.
Rooms:
  • Tie up or tape down long electrical cords.
  • Put safety plugs in all unused electrical outlets.
  • Carpet stairs to prevent slipping.
  • Frequently check floors for small objects that a baby might swallow, e.g. coins, buttons, screw etc.
  • Make sure smoke detectors are working.
  • Move sharp-edged furniture away from high traffic areas.
  • Anchor down unsteady pieces of furniture, such as bookcases, chesters.
